The Best Movies For Movie Night

By Elana Goodwin on October 11, 2014

If you feel like having a night in, whether alone or with friends, a great way to spend your night is hanging out and watching movies.

Here are some of the best movie night movies to watch, broken down by category so there’s something for you no matter what kind of film you’re in the mood for.

If you’re feeling a Disney-kind of vibe, go for a classic Disney movie from your childhood or even one that’s become a classic more recently.

If you’re feeling the love, you can do a throwback movie night with “The Lion King” which is always a fun one to watch over and over. Plus, bonus: you can sing along with the iconic music because you know you’ve got the lyrics down, natch.

Or if you want a more recent Disney release, go for “The Incredibles” or “Finding Nemo.”

In the Oscar-winning “Incredibles” you can watch a totally wicked undercover superhero family voiced by big stars save the day and in the Oscar-winning “Nemo” you can watch Dory and Marlin just keep swimming to find Nemo.

Either way, not a bad way to spend the night.

But if you want to see some action, some adventure, and maybe even some guns and things blowing up, check out one of these movies.

The Oscar-nominated “Die Hard” is pretty much the ultimate action movie; I mean, you’ve got Bruce Willis yipee-kay-yaying around the Nakatomi Plaza building and crawling in air vents trying to save a bunch of hostages while being a pain in the terrorist’s ass.

Or you could do the more recent superhero blockbuster “The Avengers” which features all your favorite Marvel characters in an epic battle to save the universe.

You could also always watch the good old heist movie, “Ocean’s Eleven” and see George Clooney, Brad Pitt and their band of merry men rob a casino.

Plus, these three movies are perfect if you want to do a marathon; the “Die Hard” series is made up of five films; “The Avengers” can be seen with the “Iron Man,” “Thor,” “Captain America” and “Incredible Hulk” movies; and “Ocean’s” is a trilogy.

If you’re in the mood for an “oldie but goodie” throw it back with “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and watch Bueller ditch school and have pretty much the most epic day ever (like, in the history of mankind).

Or you can watch five very different kids come together during detention in “The Breakfast Club” or go for the inconceivably awesome fairy tale movie “The Princess Bride.”

Want to watch a rom-com? You could always re-watch (because obviously you have to have seen it before) the iconic “When Harry Met Sally” and watch Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan find love.

Or you could see Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds find love in “The Proposal,” and bonus: Betty White is awesome as Reynolds’ grandmother in the movie.

Lastly, you could always go for a bit of a darker rom-com and see the Oscar-winning “Silver Linings Playbook” with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper and watch as they (surprise!) fall in love.

If you just want to enjoy a plain ol’ comedy, hold the romance (mostly), you can watch the insta-classic Oscar-nominated “Bridesmaids” and spend your night ready to par-tay or go for the hilarious bro-tastic movie “The Hangover.”

Feel like a comedy with a bit more of a dramatic edge? Go for the Oscar-winning “Little Miss Sunshine” about a dysfunctional family who travel cross-country in a VW bus so their adolescent daughter can compete in a beauty pageant.

Besides being funny, “Sunshine” will make you appreciate your own dysfunctional family and your family vacations which will start looking pretty functional and good as you watch the film.

If you’re having a girls night and want to watch a chick flickre-watch the totally fetch Lindsay Lohan classic “Mean Girls.” Or if you want to go full-on girl cliche, pop in the super romantic Ryan Gosling-Rachel McAdams love story ”The Notebook.” Have tissues ready.

Lastly, you could always go for ”Crazy, Stupid, Love” with Emma Stone and again, Ryan Gosling (sense a theme here?). The movie’s got an all-star cast, plus you get to see Ryan Reynolds shirtless, and do the lift from “Dirty Dancing” and in general be awesome.

Finally, if you’re craving a musical or a movie you can sing along to, get down (good lord) with the awesome a cappella movie “Pitch Perfect” which will no doubt have you singing along in no time.

But, if you want to go full-on musical and watch a longer movie, go for the hauntingly beautiful three Oscar-winning “Les Miserables” or the film version of the award-winning musical “Rent.” Both feature amazing voices, music, and stories, that’ll make you glad you didn’t go out tonight.

So no matter what movie you pick from the best movie night movies listed or whether you pick a different one altogether, enjoy staying in and getting lost in a good film; plus, getting to wear your PJs or sweats while you do is a perk, too.
