Florida State joins Penn State and LSU in suspending Greek life activities, after a freshmen student died Friday following what authorities believe is an alcohol-related tragedy. FSU President John Thrasher indefinitely suspended the school’s 55 fraternities and sororities yesterday.

“‘I just feel like for whatever reason, the message is not getting through,’ Thrasher said. ‘Unfortunately we’ve got to take steps with our students, to make sure this never happens again,’” the Associated Press reported.

Andrew Coffey, a pledge at Pi Kappa Phi, was pronounced dead Friday after he was found unresponsive following a party. Police said there were indicators that alcohol may have played a part, but were waiting for an autopsy before officially announcing the cause of death.

There was more bad news for FSU Greek life yesterday, as the AP also reported that “Garrett John Marcy, a member of Phi Delta Theta, was charged with the sale and trafficking of cocaine. Marcy, 20, was arrested by Florida State University police and booked into Leon County jail, where his bail was set at $75,000.”

Earlier this year, Ball State fraternities voluntarily banned alcohol at events through the end of 2017.

AIR FORCE ERROR ALLOWED TEXAS CHURCH GUNMAN TO BUY WEAPONS

The Air Force admitted Monday that it failed to register in a federal database the domestic abuse court-martial that would have kept the lone gunman who killed 26 people in a Sutherland Springs, Texas church from buying weapons.

The New York Times reports, “Under federal law the conviction of the gunman, Devin P. Kelley, for domestic assault on his wife and toddler stepson – he had cracked the child’s skull – should have stopped Mr. Kelley from legally purchasing the military-style rifle and three other guns he bought in the last four years.”

New details on the shooting were also released Monday including a possible motive: Kelley may have been driven by anger towards his estranged wife’s family and targeted this church because his ex-mother-in-law was a member of the congregation. Kelley’s ex-wife and parents were not in attendance however.
