Why You Should Encourage Employee Feedback

By Kailey Walters on August 8, 2018

Maintaining a company successfully is often hard work. With multiple departments and many different employees, keeping everyone happy and satisfied can sometimes feel like a major balancing act. After all, everyone has various needs and preferences, so what can employers and Human Resources (HR) do to cater to them and help improve their experiences?

One solution is to encourage anonymous feedback from your employees on a regular basis. As the employees make up the company, hearing from them about their own experiences and what they like or don’t like is beneficial to the company’s overall flourishing.

To take steps toward making your company the best it can be, read on for more reasons as to why and how you should encourage employee feedback.

The employees will feel valued.

Engaging your employees in the process of improving the company will make them feel useful and valuable. When they have the chance to express their opinions, they will feel that their voices matter and that they have something to contribute to the company — not only for their own benefit, but for the improvement of the company and its legacy in the long run.

Giving feedback will allow the employees to feel happier.

By giving your employees an opportunity to voice their opinions, they will be able to release whatever thoughts and ideas they’ve been holding inside themselves — which is beneficial whether they have something negative or positive to say. If they are encouraged to make known their beliefs and opinions, and those complaints are later addressed by the company, they will become that much happier and more satisfied with their overall experience at the company. On the other hand, if they are able to say something positive about their work experience, they will — as mentioned previously — feel valuable to the company.

Which leads to the next point …

Happier employees = more productive employees.

When employees are happy with the way things are going at work, they will inevitably be motivated to work harder and thus contribute more productively to the company. Having employees who genuinely are invested in and enjoy their work will be a great asset to the company. When they know that they are heard and appreciated by their workplace and the people around them, these employees will feel the urge to give back to their company. They may show their appreciation in any number of ways, from simply working harder or continuing to give their best in every project they work on, to showing their explicit thanks to a manager or coworker with a gift.

Encouraging anonymous feedback can be an effective system.

Oftentimes, giving honest and constructive feedback can be difficult without the secure cover of anonymity. This problem can be solved with an anonymous feedback system, which would allow employees to feel free to share their honest opinions and thoughts without fear of being judged or punished in some way.

The employees’ feedback can be used to improve the company.

Of course, the overarching reason why you would encourage employee feedback in the first place is simple: to improve the company. After all, you wouldn’t want to gather feedback just for the sake of it — rather, employee feedback is very valuable because it comes directly from the people who comprise the foundation of the entire company. Using their feedback to make changes will consequently improve the workplace in effective ways — ways that directly impact them on a day-to-day basis and affect the quality of work they are putting out.

On a larger scale, making use of employee feedback can lead to change and innovation for the entire company. No company wants to stay stagnant for long periods of time; instead, it wants to constantly move forward and be better at the various operations it performs. In this vein, if you want your company to change and become more innovative over time, an extremely effective way to do so is to consider feedback from employees. After all, the relationship between a company’s employees and its leaders is a very important one. Maintaining an open line of communication is key if the company as a whole seeks to grow and thrive together.

Considering all the potential benefits of encouraging employee feedback, there shouldn’t be any reason to not implement a feedback system at your workplace. Keep in mind all the great ways the employees, the managers and bosses, and the company as an entity can grow with the help of employee feedback — and watch the company soar to new heights.
